Despite being at the height of of professional basketball career, Guy made the decision to step away, retiring at the young age of 27. The announcement came as a shock to basketball fans, who took to social media to express their confusion.
“ A lot of people didn’t understand it. I was playing so well, making good money, but sometimes it's about something more,” states Guy.
He continues to explain that playing didn’t fill up his soul, and he was ready to step into a role that he felt passionate about.
“I think my true calling is mentorship, and connecting and guiding these young men these past few months has confirmed that,” says Guy.
His return to UVA as an assistant coach was met with excitement from Cavalier fans, eager to see their shining star to return to pass on his knowledge to the next generation. His return is a picture of the deep ties curated by the program under the lead of Tony Bennett.
Guy’s experiences playing under Tony Bennett’s system have given him a unique perspective that will be invaluable in his coaching role. As an assistant coach, Guy is expected to play a significant role in helping the next generation of players navigate the challenges of collegiate basketball. His familiarity with Bennett’s system and his own experience in high-pressure situations will likely make him a valuable mentor,
“ It wasn't that long ago that I was in their shoes. I think I have a lot of wisdom and advice to offer these young guys, that’ll hopefully help them navigate it better than I did,” says Guy.
Guy had been open about his mental health struggles after the historic loss against UMBC in 2018, where UVA lost as a number one seed against a 16th seed. He hopes to help the next generation navigate the game and the mental health struggles that come with the pressure of playing on such a large stage.
“ Those were some dark times, and it wasn’t talked about as much then. I feel like it started the conversation, and mental health has become much more of a priority. These guys have a lot on their plate and are on a public stage, it can be a lot,” states Guy.
In a new era of NIL, where players can be paid, it helps to have some fresh and young coaches bringing in a different perspective. Guy is expected to be a key piece in helping bridge the gap between the old college basketball and the new landscape it is today.
He believes his experience professionally will transfer well with the new “business” oriented trajectory college basketball is taking. He has experience with agents, sponsorships, and cementing business deals due to his time playing professionally.
Kyle Guy’s decision to return to UVA as a coach represents a full-circle moment for both the player and the program. As a player, Guy achieved a lot for the program, and now has the opportunity to mentor and shape the future of UVA. His influence, both on and off the court, will ensure that UVA basketball remains a powerful force to be reckoned with in college hoops.
